The Submarine Delivery Group (SDG), part of the UK Defence Nuclear Enterprise, has deployed shipping-container-based additive manufacturing workshops at HM Naval Base Clyde, bringing metal printing and scanning capability directly to the submarine maintenance quayside. The workshops, custom-designed by QinetiQ and operated jointly with Royal Navy ship’s staff and the Submarine Flotilla Engineering Support Group, include metal LPBF printers, handheld scanners for reverse-engineering legacy parts, and dedicated engineering workspace. The initiative is led by Commander Max, SDG Additive Manufacturing Lead, and supports the Submarine Maintenance Recovery Plan launched by the First Sea Lord in January 2026. The team’s Market Access Cell processes demand signals from ships’ staff when components are unavailable or lead times are too long, then works with QinetiQ and the SDG Design Authority to identify the best manufacturing solution.

This deployment represents a rare instance of additive manufacturing moving from isolated prototyping into operational naval logistics infrastructure, directly addressing the aerospace and defense qualification grind that typically slows AM adoption in military contexts. By placing metal AM capability at the point of need, SDG bypasses the lengthy supply chains and obsolescence problems that plague legacy submarine parts - a pattern that mirrors the broader defense-driven acceleration of AM adoption seen in 2025-26, particularly under the AUKUS framework.
