BDC StrongNorth Defence Fund selects Landing Zones Canada as first investment for stratospheric UAS development

Originally reported by canadianmanufacturing.com

Landing Zones Canada Inc. has secured an undisclosed investment from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) through its newly launched $300 million StrongNorth Defence Fund. Led by Managing Partner Peter Suma, the fund is part of a broader $6 billion BDC Defence Platform aimed at supporting Canadian startups in deep tech sectors. Based in Medicine Hat, the company will utilize this capital to accelerate R&D, scale manufacturing, and commercialize its stratospheric uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). CEO Spencer Fraser confirmed the funds will specifically target the development of reusable near-space platforms to replace single-use meteorological equipment.

The investment addresses a critical gap in the aerospace and defense supply chain: the need for sustainable, reusable high-altitude platforms. Landing Zones Canada's Gitpo drone serves as a reusable alternative to traditional single-use weather sondes, targeting the reduction of electronic waste in meteorological monitoring. By operating in the stratosphere, these systems occupy a niche between conventional aircraft and orbital satellites, providing a cost-effective layer for sensors, autonomous systems, and advanced aerial technologies. This positioning is vital as defense and dual-use sectors increasingly demand persistent, low-cost surveillance and data collection capabilities.

From a manufacturing standpoint, the company must now transition from prototype development to high-rate production of complex UAS components. Success depends on the ability to scale specialized manufacturing processes for stratospheric-grade materials that can withstand extreme thermal cycling and low-pressure environments. The immediate priority will be establishing robust supply chains for the Gitpo platform to meet growing international market interest and fulfill dual-use requirements for both commercial meteorology and defense applications.
