The Centre for Innovation and Research in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (CIRAMM) at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, Canada, is scaling its applied research operations to support the aerospace, defence, and energy sectors. Led by Research Chair Dr. Hamid Rajani, the 20-member team focuses on integrating materials science, data science, and advanced manufacturing workflows including simulation, prototyping, and robotics. CIRAMM operates as one of 13 Canadian sites within the NATO Defence Innovation Accelerator for Accelerating Readiness and Advancement (DIANA) network, providing a direct link between academic research and international security requirements.
This expansion addresses a critical gap in the Canadian industrial ecosystem, where the aerospace sector maintains an R&D intensity 2.8 times higher than other manufacturing industries. By housing the Alberta Aerospace Research Centre (AARC) and the Aerospace Composite Materials Lab (ACML), CIRAMM positions itself at the intersection of high-performance material characterization and digital manufacturing. The center's ability to provide industry-agnostic research services allows it to serve as a specialized node in the supply chain for complex components, specifically targeting the need for resilient, high-performance materials in aerospace and defence applications.
For industrial partners, CIRAMM provides a localized capability for validating novel materials and automated production processes without the capital expenditure of in-house advanced labs. The center's integration into the NATO DIANA network means its research outputs are increasingly aligned with standardized international defence requirements. Success for CIRAMM will depend on its ability to translate laboratory-scale material characterization into scalable, production-ready manufacturing protocols for Tier 1 and Tier 2 aerospace suppliers.
