Formlabs has officially launched Form Now, a direct-to-door 3D printing service providing customers with rapid access to its industrial SLA and SLS machine fleet. Based at the company's Massachusetts facility, the service enables two-day delivery across the United States for parts printed in over 28 engineering-grade materials. The catalog includes SLA resins such as Rigid 10K and Elastic 50A, alongside SLS powders including Nylon 11, Nylon 12, Nylon 12 GF, and TPU 90A. Users can upload STL or OBJ files directly to the platform to receive automated quotes for prototype validation and low-volume production runs.
This service marks a strategic shift for Formlabs, moving from a pure-play hardware and materials manufacturer to an integrated service provider, directly competing with established on-demand manufacturing platforms like Xometry and Protolabs. By leveraging its own installed base of industrial machines, Formlabs addresses the market demand for immediate access to high-performance polymer parts without the capital expenditure of hardware ownership. This move allows the company to capture value from users who require professional-grade material properties but lack the internal infrastructure or volume to justify purchasing an SLA or SLS system.
Form Now signals a broader industry trend toward the servitization of additive manufacturing, where OEMs seek to monetize their machine fleets directly to end-users. This model optimizes production economics by utilizing idle capacity and streamlining the supply chain for rapid prototyping. Industry observers should monitor whether this service expands to include metal additive manufacturing or if it triggers similar direct-to-consumer service models from other major hardware OEMs in the coming fiscal year.
