
GKN Aerospace wins multi-year Pratt & Whitney repair contracts covering 20+ GTF component types, deploys DED in Sweden

GKN Aerospace has secured multi-year repair agreements from Pratt & Whitney spanning more than 20 component types across the geared turbofan engine family, with contract terms running 5 to 10 years. The work splits across three sites by capability: Trollhattan, Sweden; Johor, Malaysia; and San Diego, California. A specific PW1500G/PW1900G contract is divided so Trollhattan handles Exit Guide Vane stator repairs using directed energy deposition, rebuilding worn geometry on parts that conventional repair would otherwise scrap. Johor takes on stator and stator-assembly repairs plus next-generation composite fan blade work, while San Diego expands into thermal coating and ultrasonic shot peening.
The deal sits in the part of AM adoption with the clearest economics: repair rather than new-part manufacture. DED lets GKN restore high-value rotating and structural hardware without competing against an already-qualified OEM production process, so the qualification burden is lower than for a newly printed part. As the GTF fleet ages and MRO queues lengthen, converting a scrap decision into a repair decision has direct consequences for turnaround time and spare-parts supply. Splitting the work by site-specific capability across three continents also shows how aerospace MRO providers are now matching AM-enabled repair processes to specific damage modes rather than centralizing them in one facility.
