Heidelberg Materials Italia is presenting a large-scale 3D printed concrete installation at Milan Design Week 2026, located at Via Solferino 28 in Milan. Designed by Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA), the structure consists of approximately 1,000 interlocking modules of two distinct sizes, manufactured using the i.tech 3D NF high-performance mortar. The additive manufacturing process was executed by Erratic, a Vicenza-based industrial robotics firm specializing in construction-scale AM. The installation serves as a functional demonstration of modular assembly and controlled extrusion within the Città delle Idee project.

This deployment highlights the critical role of specialized material science in the construction AM value chain. The i.tech 3D NF mortar is a fiber-reinforced cementitious mixture featuring an aggregate diameter of less than 4 mm, optimized for continuous pumping and layer adhesion. By utilizing pozzolanic materials and maintaining low water-to-cement ratios, the material achieves nearly double the compressive strength of conventional concrete. Furthermore, the inclusion of 15% recycled content and polymer fibers addresses the industry's dual requirements for structural crack prevention and reduced carbon footprints in large-scale extrusion applications.

For industrial players, this project demonstrates the technical necessity of tight integration between material rheology and robotic extrusion hardware.
