IADYS, a French robotics company that builds autonomous water surface cleaning robots, worked with service bureau Sculpteo to produce threaded net standoff fasteners using HP Multi Jet Fusion and PA12. The robots collect floating waste and hydrocarbons in ports, marinas, and industrial sites, so the fasteners need dimensional accuracy and resistance to prolonged hydrocarbon exposure plus continuous immersion in fresh and saline water. IADYS wanted small-series production without tooling costs, which favored MJF over injection molding at this volume, and PA12's chemical and moisture resistance matched the fastening and durability requirements.

The choice reflects a common pattern in marine and environmental robotics: functional hardware like threaded fasteners rarely justifies molded tooling at pre-scale volumes, so bureau-supplied MJF nylon becomes the default for parts needing threading, chemical resistance, and repeatable accuracy in one build. This is a component-level adoption story, not a signal of new market entry or capacity expansion, and it shows service bureaus continuing to capture low-volume functional-part work that OEMs would otherwise machine or source conventionally. For robotics builders in harsh aquatic settings, PA12 MJF parts offer a validated route to combine threaded features with hydrocarbon and saltwater resistance without a separate qualification cycle.
