QinetiQ has deployed its Additive Manufacturing All In One solution and Market Access Cell at HM Naval Base Clyde, enabling Royal Navy engineers to 3D-print submarine components dockside. The company previously supported maintenance of the nuclear-powered submarine HMS Anson, designing and delivering replacement parts in four weeks versus normal supply chain lead times. Will Blamey, Chief Executive of UK Defence at QinetiQ, stated the capability allows printing, scanning, and reverse engineering of parts on demand at pace.
This deployment represents a concrete application of metal AM for naval sustainment, a segment where qualification barriers and supply chain inertia have historically limited adoption. QinetiQ is positioning its integrated solution - combining hardware, scanning, reverse engineering, and material qualification - as a turnkey path around the traditional aerospace qualification grind.
