
Renishaw launches NxG Build Processor with Materialise for metal AM workflow integration

Renishaw has introduced its next-generation Build Processor (NxG BP), developed in collaboration with Materialise, to tighten the integration between Materialise Magics software and Renishaw's RenAM 500 series metal additive manufacturing systems. The new software enables direct export of build files using the QuantAM file format, eliminating manual file transfers and reducing job preparation time. Key features include Swim Lane laser control, which distributes scanning across the build platform to prevent multi-laser interference and improve part quality, as well as integrated inspection tools and support for nTop implicit modelling workflows. Ben Diaz, Renishaw's Product Manager, stated that the processor was designed around customer feedback to simplify the design-to-production journey for advanced users managing complex production environments.
This launch addresses a persistent friction point in metal PBF-LB production: the software handoff between design preparation and machine control. By embedding laser path verification and multi-laser coordination directly into the build preparation stage, Renishaw reduces the risk of build failures that erode the economics of serial production. The partnership with Materialise - the dominant platform for AM data preparation - signals that Renishaw is prioritizing workflow reliability over proprietary lock-in. The inclusion of nTop implicit modelling support also aligns with the growing demand for lattice and topology-optimized geometries in aerospace and medical applications, where Renishaw's RenAM systems already have a qualified installed base. For existing Renishaw customers, the ability to renew Magics and Build Processor licences directly through Renishaw at a lower combined cost creates a modest economic incentive to stay within the ecosystem.
From a practical standpoint, this is a workflow optimization, not a breakthrough in machine capability. The Swim Lane laser control is a useful refinement for multi-laser builds, but similar multi-laser coordination features already exist in competing software stacks from EOS and SLM Solutions. What matters more is whether Renishaw can demonstrate measurable yield improvements and reduced job preparation time in customer production environments - the kind of data that would justify the software licence cost for contract manufacturers running high-throughput metal AM operations. Users evaluating the NxG BP should benchmark it against their current workflow for a representative multi-laser build to assess whether the integration savings outweigh the learning curve.
