Zellerfeld has announced a partnership with Volumental, the foot-scanning technology company, alongside a roughly $900,000 investment. Volumental’s in-store and mobile scanning solutions will be directly integrated into Zellerfeld’s 3D printing pipeline, enabling custom-fit shoes printed to the precise contours of an individual customer’s foot. Zellerfeld CEO Cornelius Schmitt stated that Volumental was selected after evaluating all credible scanning options, citing precision and user experience as decisive factors. Volumental CEO Alper Aydemir noted that the partnership validates the company’s decade-long effort to build a fit-technology layer for the footwear industry.

This deal sits at the intersection of two recurring dynamics in additive manufacturing: the platformization of production and the data moat. Zellerfeld has transitioned from a luxury-brand darling to a platform that allows designers to upload and sell shoe designs, effectively creating a YouTube-for-footwear model. By integrating Volumental’s 66 million foot scans from over 3,000 retail locations, Zellerfeld is building a data asset that could become as valuable as its printing infrastructure. This mirrors the pattern seen in other AM segments where the value shifts from hardware to the software and data layers that govern repeatable, customized output.
