3D Systems' subsidiary Elmet Technologies is deploying the DMP Flex 350 Triple metal additive system to produce hypersonic vehicle components in C103, a niobium-based alloy suited to extreme high-temperature service. The processing parameters for C103 came out of an eight-year collaboration with 3D Systems' Application Innovation Group, work that predates most of the current hypersonic funding wave and gives Elmet a running start on a notoriously difficult refractory material. The DMP Flex 350 Triple pairs a large build volume with three lasers and a low-oxygen chamber, features aimed squarely at throughput and the tight contamination control refractory alloys demand. Elmet is now pursuing rapid qualification and certification of the system, with NASA certification expected to follow.

Refractory metals like niobium alloys sit outside the Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel work that dominates metal LPBF today, and C103 processing has stayed a narrow specialty precisely because oxygen pickup and cracking are hard to control at scale. An eight-year parameter-development runway signals this is closer to production-readiness than a demo, and it lands as US defense and hypersonics programs are actively looking to shorten qualification timelines rather than accept the multi-year cycles typical of aerospace AM. Elmet's stated goal, in-house material production paired with in-house printing to reduce reliance on outside supply chains, fits the broader push toward domestic sourcing for defense-critical components, an emphasis reinforced by the qualification-cost pressure building around near-term defense procurement policy changes.

The execution question is whether NASA certification and any subsequent defense qualifications arrive on the timeline 3D Systems is signaling, since refractory-alloy programs have a track record of slipping even after strong parameter data. Buyers evaluating Elmet as a hypersonics supplier should look for named program wins or contract awards once certification lands, since a qualified machine and process is a precondition for revenue, not a proxy for it.
