Carbon has designated DDK Group as its first Tier 1 contract manufacturer for 3D printed bicycle saddles in Asia, consolidating Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) production and final assembly under one roof in Taiwan. DDK, a five-decade-old saddle specialist with vertical integration across frame construction, padding, covers, and rail systems, will now operate dedicated Carbon printing capacity to serve mass-market bicycle OEMs. Carbon CEO Phil DeSimone stated that 3D printed saddles have moved from flagship novelty to a must-have category, with nearly one million units produced to date and demand exceeding existing North American and European capacity.

This partnership marks a structural shift in the consumer-electronics-adjacent bicycle vertical, where 3D printed saddles have historically been confined to premium road segments from Specialized, Fizik, and Selle Italia. By embedding DLS production into DDK's existing high-volume manufacturing stack—covering road, mountain, trekking, city, BMX, and junior categories—Carbon is effectively compressing the saddle supply chain and lowering the cost threshold for mass-market adoption. The move aligns with the broader pattern of Chinese and Taiwanese contract manufacturers localizing AM production to serve regional OEM supply chains, reducing handoffs and qualification timelines. For DDK, the deal provides a differentiated manufacturing capability that strengthens its position against traditional saddle fabricators who lack AM integration.

For DDK, the practical challenge now is ramping DLS throughput to match its existing assembly line cadence while maintaining the material consistency that Carbon's brand customers require. The company must demonstrate that it can deliver finished saddles—not just printed lattices—at volumes that justify the dedicated capacity investment. Buyers evaluating DDK-sourced saddles should verify that the full assembly, including cover and rail bonding, meets the same quality standards as Carbon's existing North American production.
