Portuguese construction firm Havelar has completed a 500 m² recycling center office at the Ecocentro de Perafita in Porto for the Matosinhos municipality using a COBOD BOD2 concrete 3D printer. The structure was built by a four-person crew in nine working days and, notably, came in on budget - a rarity for Portuguese public works. Bárbara Rangel from the University of Porto noted that the curved concrete walls, which typically require expensive custom formwork and extended timelines, were produced directly from the digital model with no additional cost. José Maria Ferreira, Havelar’s Founder and CEO, stated the project used one-third the time, one-third the materials, and one-third the people of conventional construction.

This project is part of Havelar’s deliberate scaling from proof-of-concept into operational production: since completing the recycling center, the firm has printed 32 housing units in Porto, with 53 additional homes scheduled across Portugal in 2026. The execution aligns with broader European momentum in construction 3D printing, exemplified by France’s ViliaSprint² project - the continent’s largest 3D printed multi-family residence at 800 m² across three floors, printed in 34 days versus an original estimate of 50. Havelar’s ability to deliver a public building on budget with a minimal crew challenges the persistent narrative that 3D construction printing remains an experimental niche. While the company uses the COBOD BOD2, a well-established platform, its operational discipline in scheduling parallel trades and eliminating drying wait times is what enabled the cost and schedule outcomes - not the hardware alone.

What matters practically is execution discipline. Havelar has shown that construction 3D printing can meet public-sector procurement constraints when the printing process is integrated with conventional trade sequencing rather than treated as a standalone novelty. The company’s next test is whether this repeatability holds across the 53-unit pipeline and whether it can maintain budget adherence as project complexity increases. For the broader construction AM segment, the lesson is that platform availability is no longer the bottleneck - consistent project management and local supply-chain integration are what separate Havelar’s result from the many under-budget or delayed concrete-printing demonstrations that preceded it.
