Hyundai Motor Group has opened its Additive Manufacturing Solution Center (AMSC) at the Namyang R&D Center in Hwaseong, South Korea, as part of a broader R&D digital transformation initiative that includes a digital measurement center (DMC) and a driving simulator. The AMSC operates polymer vat photopolymerization cells - both DLP and SLA types - for heritage vehicle restoration and prototyping, alongside Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) equipment capable of building large metal components from steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium without intermediate assembly. The facility, which began full operation in May 2026, represents roughly 30 years of internal 3D printing experience dating back to Hyundai's first printer acquisition in 1996, but is now consolidated into a dedicated additive manufacturing building that also supports inter-company business coordination across the group.

Hyundai's move to create a dedicated AM center with WAAM capability places it among a small but growing group of automotive OEMs investing in large-format metal additive manufacturing for production-adjacent applications - distinct from the tooling-and-prototype focus that has dominated automotive AM adoption to date. WAAM's ability to produce large, near-net-shape parts from engineering alloys directly from CAD data offers a path to reduce lead times for low-volume components, replacement parts, and motorsport or high-performance vehicle programs such as Hyundai N and Genesis Magma. Within the automotive vertical, this positions Hyundai alongside BMW and Porsche as OEMs that have moved beyond isolated prototyping into structured AM centers with dedicated metal deposition capacity, though Hyundai's center is notable for combining polymer photopolymerization and metal DED under one roof rather than separating them by material class.

For the broader AM industry, the practical significance is that a top-five global automaker has committed physical facilities and process infrastructure to additive manufacturing, not just a pilot line. The AMSC suggests Hyundai believes the technology can earn its place alongside conventional forming and machining within a 30-year timeframe. What matters now is whether Hyundai can translate this capability into qualified production parts - not just prototypes or restoration items - and whether it will make its AMSC available to external suppliers or keep it as an internal group resource.
