LightForce Orthodontics launches LightBracket Metal, patient-specific 3D printed metal braces

LightForce Orthodontics, a Massachusetts-based orthodontic technology company, has commercially launched LightBracket Metal, a patient-specific metal orthodontic bracket produced via a proprietary metal 3D printing process. The brackets are designed with custom geometry for each tooth, including a conformal base matching individual tooth morphology, patient-specific slot height and prescription, tie wings, and hooks. The company reports that its previous generation of 3D printed polymer brackets achieved up to 60% fewer appointments and 43% shorter treatment times compared to conventional braces. LightForce has raised $150 million to date, including an $80 million round, and was founded in 2019 by CEO Alfred Griffin and President James Lawton.

This launch targets the multi-billion-dollar orthodontic market, which has been dominated by Align Technology's Invisalign clear aligner system — the largest production application of vat photopolymerization globally. LightForce is pursuing a fundamentally different strategy: rather than competing directly on aligners, it is digitizing the traditional bracket-based braces workflow with fully customized metal brackets. This approach addresses a persistent gap in the medical-dental AM vertical: while polymer-based aligners have scaled massively, metal bracket customization has remained largely manual and stock-based. If LightForce's proprietary metal printing process delivers consistent quality at competitive cost, it could create a durable IP lock-in moat through embedded clinical workflow integration and patient-specific design files, making replacement difficult for competitors.

For LightForce, the critical execution challenge is proving that its proprietary metal printing process can achieve the surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and debond-rate reduction needed for routine clinical use at scale. The company must also demonstrate that its unit economics allow orthodontists to adopt customized metal brackets without prohibitive per-patient cost increases. If these conditions hold, LightForce becomes a credible acquisition target for larger dental OEMs like Dentsply Sirona or Straumann, or a direct competitive threat to Align's market position in the broader orthodontic treatment market.
