MyMiniFactory, the current owner of Thingiverse, announced plans to revive the long-dormant 3D model repository with a series of new features, including an ad-free browsing tier and redesigned monetization tools for designers. The company will detail the changes during an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session scheduled for June 9, 2026. The ad-free option directly addresses one of the most persistent user complaints about the platform, while the new designer monetization system aims to replace the existing tipping mechanism with a more sustainable revenue model for creators. MyMiniFactory acquired Thingiverse from MakerBot in a deal that closed in 2024, inheriting a site that had seen minimal investment from its previous corporate owners.

This move fits a recurring pattern in the broader AM ecosystem: a platform with massive historical user data and brand recognition is acquired by a smaller, more agile operator that must retrofit a viable business model onto legacy infrastructure. Thingiverse remains one of the largest repositories of printable 3D models by raw file count, but its user experience and search functionality have degraded relative to competitors like Printables, Cults3D, and MakerWorld. MyMiniFactory’s own platform has demonstrated that a curated, community-driven model repository can sustain itself through premium subscriptions and designer commissions. The challenge here is that Thingiverse’s user base is far larger and more heterogeneous, and the site’s reputation for broken links, slow load times, and intrusive ads has driven many power users to alternatives. The success of this revival depends on whether MyMiniFactory can execute the technical overhaul without alienating the remaining loyalists who still rely on Thingiverse for legacy file access.

From a practical standpoint, MyMiniFactory needs to deliver the ad-free tier and monetization features on schedule and demonstrate measurable improvements in site reliability and search performance within the next two quarters. The AMA session will be the first real test of whether the company can communicate a clear roadmap and rebuild trust with a skeptical community. For users, the immediate takeaway is that Thingiverse is not being shut down, but its future depends on whether enough designers see the new monetization tools as worth the switch back from platforms that already pay them reliably.
