Shanghai-based Yunzhu 3D (云铸三维) and Magnesium Light (镁莱特) have won the 2026 Red Dot Design Concept Award's highest honor, Best of the Best (至尊金奖), for the KIVRO titanium wheelchair. Yunzhu 3D served as the exclusive additive manufacturing partner, handling full-process SLM metal 3D printing, post-processing, and precision inspection of the wheelchair's titanium alloy frame, biomimetic lattice support structure, and integrated connectors. The KIVRO wheelchair, designed by a Chinese-Italian team, is the first Chinese wheelchair entry to receive this top Red Dot honor, selected from over 10,000 global entries for its lightweight structure and integrated bionic design.

This award validates a recurring pattern in the AM industry: design-driven partnerships that leverage metal AM's unique capabilities in lattice structures and topology optimization to create end-use products that cannot be made by conventional manufacturing. For Yunzhu 3D, a national-level specialized "Little Giant" enterprise with four manufacturing bases and over 100 industrial SLM/SLA/SLS machines, the KIVRO project demonstrates its ability to bridge aerospace-grade manufacturing quality with medical rehabilitation applications. The win provides Yunzhu 3D with a powerful marketing credential that can be reused across multiple verticals - medical exoskeletons, humanoid robot joints, and eVTOL components - where lightweight lattice structures and integrated manufacturing are valued. The partnership also highlights how Chinese AM service bureaus are moving beyond pure production to co-develop award-winning end products with design partners, strengthening their position in the high-value medical and consumer segments.

For Yunzhu 3D, the practical next step is converting this design award into production orders. The KIVRO wheelchair's individualized customization model - using 3D body scanning to generate bespoke frames - requires a service workflow that Yunzhu 3D must now operationalize at scale. The company's existing aerospace-grade quality control processes, including CT scanning and CMM inspection, provide a credible foundation, but the medical device market demands regulatory certifications (FDA, CE) that the company will need to secure for commercial rollout. This award opens doors, but the real test is repeatable delivery at competitive cost.
