Bondtech, in collaboration with Prusa Research, has begun series production of the INDX toolchanger conversion kit for the Prusa CORE One and CORE One+ printers. The Founder’s Edition units have already shipped to early adopters, with the regular retrofit kit expected to leave the factory by the end of July and the full first batch completed by the end of August. The system supports up to eight tool heads and introduces a new automatic tool offset calibration sensor that uses a load cell for the Z-axis and an inductive sensor for X and Y, scanning each axis multiple times per print start. Prusa also highlighted the INDX’s material efficiency in multi-color printing: in a benchmark against five competing multi-color systems, the INDX produced only 29 grams of waste on a model that generated up to 696 grams of waste on other platforms, with the waste pellets averaging just 0.013 to 0.015 grams per tool change.

This launch lands in the middle of the polymer material extrusion segment’s ongoing battle over multi-color and multi-material economics. The dominant multi-color approach - filament swapping with a single nozzle - generates significant purge waste, which has become a visible cost and sustainability pain point for prosumer and light-industrial users. Bondtech’s INDX directly addresses that gap by using a dedicated tool head per filament, eliminating the need for purge towers and reducing waste to near-negligible levels. The system competes with Bambu Lab’s AMS-based multi-filament approach and the broader palette of MMU-style units from Prusa itself, but the INDX differentiates on waste discipline and tool-change speed. The integration with Prusa’s CORE One platform, which already has a strong installed base in the prosumer and small-batch production segment, gives Bondtech a distribution channel and a qualified user base. The partnership also signals that Prusa is willing to offer third-party hardware upgrades as a complement to its own ecosystem, a move that keeps the CORE One platform competitive against fully integrated multi-color systems.

For users evaluating multi-color upgrades, the INDX kit offers a clear operational trade-off: higher upfront hardware cost and a larger footprint versus dramatically lower material waste and per-print filament expense. Bondtech and Prusa must now execute on delivery timelines and firmware stability, particularly for the ColorMix halftoning process that enables CMYKW+RGB configurations across eight tools. The practical takeaway is that the INDX is not a general-purpose replacement for AMS-style systems - it is a targeted solution for users who print enough multi-color volume that waste costs become a line item. The next milestone to watch is how quickly the firmware and print profiles mature for the full eight-tool configuration, as that will determine whether the system moves from enthusiast curiosity to reliable production tool.
