Bosch has published three interconnected German patent applications (DE102024211873A1, DE102024211875A1, and DE102024211876A1) describing a pellet-based 3D printing system designed to eliminate refill pauses. The core concept uses two print heads: while one actively extrudes plasticized granulate, the second refills, and a sealing device prevents material loss or contamination during idle periods. A separate patent covers motion control with frame-mounted motors to reduce moving mass. These are patent filings, not product announcements, and Bosch has not indicated commercialization plans.
This development targets a persistent pain point in pellet extrusion: the interruption required to reload piston-based extruders, which leaves defects on large-format parts. Pellets cost significantly less than filament and are available for many industrial polymers, making continuous extrusion attractive for tooling, fixtures, and large components. The dual-head approach mirrors strategies used in multi-material FFF systems but applied to granulate, where refill pauses are more disruptive. Bosch’s filings signal interest in automated, uninterrupted production, though the patents may serve as defensive protection for internal manufacturing processes rather than a market entry.
For the AM industry, this is a technical concept, not a commercial product. The real test will be whether Bosch integrates this into its own production lines or licenses the design to equipment makers. Users evaluating pellet systems should watch for demonstrations of seam quality and material consistency across head swaps, as patent claims often outpace practical reliability. Until a working machine appears, this remains an interesting but unproven approach to a known bottleneck.
