CECIMO Launches AM-Europe to Unify European Additive Manufacturing Ecosystem

CECIMO, the European Association of Manufacturing Technologies, has officially launched AM-Europe, a dedicated continental platform designed to consolidate and amplify the additive manufacturing sector's presence across Europe. The initiative transforms CECIMO's longstanding but internally-focused AM activities into an outward-facing, inclusive ecosystem with a distinct European identity. Founding members include UCIMU (Italy), AITA3D, ADDIMAT (Spain), FMTI, SWISSMEM (Switzerland), and AMUK (United Kingdom), collectively representing machine builders, technology developers, and national manufacturing associations. AM-Europe is now extending membership to national associations, research institutions, and competence centres, aiming to move European AM coordination beyond bilateral relationships toward a structured, continent-wide dialogue capable of speaking with a unified voice in Brussels.
This launch arrives at a moment when European policymakers are increasingly viewing additive manufacturing as a strategic technology for industrial flexibility, supply chain resilience, and defence capability. The platform's agenda maps directly onto these priorities, covering policy advocacy, standardisation efforts, market intelligence, skills development, and structured engagement with EU institutions. AM-Europe also commits to advancing the goals outlined in the Manifesto for a Competitive European Additive Manufacturing Sector, which frames Europe's ambition to become a global leader in AM technology deployment. The initiative addresses a long-standing fragmentation in the European AM landscape, where national associations have operated largely independently, limiting the sector's collective influence on regulation, funding, and qualification standards across critical verticals including aerospace, defence, energy, and healthcare.
For the European AM industry, AM-Europe represents a practical attempt to consolidate political and industrial weight at a time when both the US and China are pursuing more coordinated national AM strategies. The platform's success will depend on its ability to convert membership breadth into concrete policy outcomes - particularly on standardisation, defence procurement access under frameworks like the European Defence Fund, and coordinated skills development. The founding coalition's geographic and technical diversity provides a credible starting base, but the real test will be whether AM-Europe can deliver measurable influence on EU funding programmes and regulatory frameworks that directly affect AM supplier economics and qualification pathways.
