Exel Composites, a Finland-based pultrusion specialist, has deepened its partnership with Original Composites & Fiberglass (OCF) to adopt OCF's Sustaina continuous filament mat at commercial scale across European production sites. The Sustaina mat is a circular composite reinforcement made from reclaimed glass fibers, designed to replace virgin glass mat in pultrusion processes without requiring retooling or resin-system changes. Exel Composites will integrate the material into standard production lines for profiles serving construction, infrastructure, and industrial applications, marking one of the first large-scale deployments of circular glass-fiber reinforcement in continuous composite manufacturing.
This move addresses a persistent gap in composites recycling: while carbon-fiber recovery has attracted significant investment and policy attention, glass-fiber composites - which represent the vast majority of composite tonnage globally - have lacked a commercially viable circular feedstock that can be dropped into existing manufacturing workflows. Sustaina's compatibility with standard pultrusion tooling and resin systems removes the qualification friction that has historically blocked recycled fiber adoption in cost-sensitive, high-volume segments. For Exel Composites, which operates across 10 European factories, the partnership converts a pilot-scale sustainability narrative into a repeatable production reality, potentially shifting procurement patterns for glass mat across the continent's pultrusion supply chain.
The practical significance hinges on volume and consistency.
