Honda Tochigi Racing, a motorcycle club composed of Honda Motor Co. employees from its Tochigi region, will field recycled 3D-printed components on its race bike at the 2026 Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race, held July 3-5. The parts - number plates for the front and rear of the machine - are made from resin waste recovered from scrapped vehicle headlamps. Nagoya Kogei, a Japanese 3D printing service bureau and Prusa Research distributor, handled material reprocessing and fabrication using a Prusa Pro HT90 industrial FDM/FFF printer. The company operates a farm of over 100 3D printers under its "MIRROR FARM" brand, offering material development and production services from prototyping to series runs.
This application sits at the intersection of two underappreciated AM frontiers: automotive circularity and motorsports validation. While polymer AM has long been used for jigs, fixtures, and prototype trim on race cars, using recycled automotive waste - specifically headlamp resin - in a production-grade endurance racing component is rare. The Suzuka 8 Hours subjects parts to sustained high-speed vibration, heat, and aerodynamic loads at speeds exceeding 300 km/h. Success here would provide a credible durability reference for recycled FDM materials, which have historically struggled to escape the desktop prototyping ghetto.
