i3D Manufacturing, an Oregon-based metal additive manufacturing specialist and part of the BTX Precision network, has acquired Burloak Technologies, a Canadian AM and advanced manufacturing service bureau based in Ontario. Burloak brings extensive metal and polymer AM capabilities, including EOS powder bed fusion systems, CNC machining, and Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP). The deal was brokered by NewCap Partners, with Danny Piper serving as lead advisor to Samuel, Son & Co., Burloak's former parent company. Financial terms were not disclosed.
This acquisition consolidates two EOS-focused metal AM operations into a single North American service platform. i3D already operates a fleet of 30 EOS metal printers, including a dozen purchased in a single 2024 order that EOS North America President Glynn Fletcher called one of the largest metal AM investments ever in the region. Adding Burloak's complementary HIP and machining capabilities gives i3D a vertically integrated post-processing chain, reducing the need to outsource critical densification and finishing steps. The move fits the industrial-tooling and energy verticals, where part certification often requires HIP for fatigue-critical applications. It also reflects the broader pattern of service bureau consolidation as mid-tier players seek scale to compete with larger networks like Wurth Additive Group and Colibrium Additive.
For i3D, the practical challenge is integrating Burloak's Canadian operations into its existing workflow and customer qualification pipelines without disrupting ongoing production. The combined entity now has a stronger position to bid on larger aerospace and energy contracts that demand both AM and HIP under one roof. Buyers in those sectors should evaluate whether the merged team can maintain the same per-part quality and lead times across two sites before committing to long-term supply agreements.
