Nordic AM Alliance launched to strengthen regional cooperation in additive manufacturing

The Nordic Additive Manufacturing Alliance (NAMA) has been formally established, bringing together Finland's FAME Ecosystem, Sweden's RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, the Norwegian Additive Manufacturing Cluster, and Denmark's Danish AM Hub. Supported under Nordic Innovation's Nordic Forward: Competitiveness and Resilience for 2050 programme, the initiative will run from 2026 to 2028. The alliance aims to map AM capabilities across the region, identify industrial requirements, develop a shared governance framework, and create a long-term roadmap for cooperation. Eetu Holstein, Senior Ecosystem Lead at DIMECC Ltd, and Sindre Bornstein, Managing Director of Nordic Innovation, were named as key spokespeople for the project.
This initiative addresses a structural gap in the Nordic AM landscape: despite world-class expertise in materials development (Sweden), industrial implementation and digital design (Finland), circular business models (Denmark), and maritime/energy applications (Norway), cross-border collaboration has remained fragmented. NAMA formalizes a mechanism to pool these complementary strengths, which is particularly relevant as European manufacturers face pressure to localize supply chains and reduce carbon footprints. The alliance positions the Nordics to have a stronger collective voice in European and international manufacturing strategy discussions, moving beyond isolated national clusters toward a coordinated regional approach.
For the AM industry, NAMA represents a pragmatic step toward building the infrastructure for cross-border industrial resilience. The real test will be whether the alliance can translate capability mapping and governance frameworks into tangible production collaborations and shared qualification pathways. If successful, it could serve as a model for other regions seeking to coordinate AM ecosystems without consolidating ownership. The 2028 roadmap will be the key deliverable to watch.
