Outlier Space raises $10.5M pre-seed for in-space manufacturing satellite

Outlier Space, an Australian startup founded by former Rocket Lab global director Jamie France, has raised a $10.5 million pre-seed round led by New Zealand VC GD1, with participation from Airtree, Side Stage Ventures, and Investible. The company is building a satellite designed to serve as an anti-gravity chamber for pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and biotech customers who need microgravity for material processing. Outlier plans to launch its first satellite by mid-2028 and will handle both orbital operations and controlled re-entry retrieval.

The raise stands out in both size and strategy: the mean Australian pre-seed round in Q2 2026 was just $1.3 million, making this roughly 8x the typical early-stage check. Outlier is positioning itself differently from peers like Varda Industries and Space Forge, which focus on specific verticals - Varda on pharmaceuticals and Space Forge on silicon - by offering a multi-tenant platform for microgravity experimentation and production. The investor mix also signals a tactical shift: Airtree, historically a software-focused VC, is backing a hardware company with a defensible space-logistics moat.

For the AM industry, Outlier's model is significant because in-space manufacturing depends on the same materials science disciplines - crystal growth, solidification control, and thermal management - that terrestrial AM vendors have spent decades understanding. If Outlier demonstrates repeatable access to microgravity for material synthesis, it could open a new demand vertical for AM companies supplying feedstock or qualification services to space-based production workflows.
