Serendix, a Nishinomiya-based construction 3D printing company, presented a concept model of a 3D-printed military shelter at the Farnborough International Airshow in England. The design targets frontline use cases including drone hangars and troop shelters, positioned by the company as next-generation defense architecture. Serendix said it has conducted joint evaluation testing with Japan's National Defense Academy, including projectile impact tests to verify protective performance. No production timeline, pricing, or contract has been disclosed; this is a concept model shown at a trade event, not an ordered or fielded system.
The move extends Serendix's residential construction printing track record into a defense adjacency. The company built Japan's first 3D-printed house, serendix10, in March 2022, and in March 2025 completed what it called the world's first 3D-printed train station with JR West at Hatsushima Station on the Kisei Main Line. Construction-scale additive manufacturing has mostly competed on housing speed and cost; applying the same large-format extrusion approach to expedient military structures is a distinct vertical with its own qualification path, centered on ballistic and blast performance rather than residential building codes. Defense procurement interest in AM has been rising globally, and a Japanese construction printer courting that market at a UK airshow signals an attempt to build export credibility beyond its domestic housing base.
The near-term signal to watch is whether the projectile testing with the National Defense Academy converts into a formal evaluation program or procurement interest, since a trade-show concept model carries little weight without a named defense customer or spec sheet.
