Sovol M1D DualX IDEX 3D printer with tool changer raises over $2 million on Kickstarter

Sovol has raised over $2 million from more than 1,272 backers within 130 minutes on Kickstarter for its M1D DualX FDM/FFF printer. The machine combines an independent dual extruder (IDEX) setup with a tool changer system, allowing up to six additional tool heads beyond the permanently installed print head. Each head has its own nozzle and temperature control, enabling switching between materials in approximately five seconds with minimal waste and reduced cross-contamination risk.

The M1D DualX offers a single-head build volume of 300 × 300 × 350 mm, dropping to 138 × 300 × 350 mm in mirror mode. Hardened steel nozzles rated to 300°C support PLA, TPU, PETG, and with an optional enclosure, ABS, ASA, PA, and PC. Maximum travel speed is 600 mm/s with material throughput up to 30 mm³/s. The printer includes multiple cameras, automatic bed leveling, filament and clog detection, and a 5-inch touchscreen, running Sovol OrcaSlicer.

This campaign demonstrates that the desktop FDM/FFF segment continues to support crowdfunding at scale for multi-material capability. Sovol is targeting the prosumer and light-industrial user who wants IDEX flexibility and tool-changing without moving to a higher-cost platform. The rapid funding suggests strong demand for practical multi-material workflows at the sub-$1,000 price tier, though delivery and quality consistency will determine whether this translates into sustained market presence.
