EOS orders 155 Grenzebach Dual Setup Stations for automated EOS M4 ONYX metal LPBF production

EOS has ordered 155 Dual Setup Stations from Grenzebach for the EOS M4 ONYX metal LPBF system, with production at Grenzebach's Hamlar site in Bavaria. Forty stations were ordered before and during Formnext 2025; another 115 followed after the M4 ONYX introduction. The Dual Setup Station prepares the next build cylinder outside the printer while a job runs, so cylinder exchange does not force the full setup sequence inside the build chamber. EOS and Grenzebach state a job change can finish in under 30 minutes, which directly affects unproductive machine hours in multi-shift metal production.

Volume at this scale shows EOS treating automated material and job preparation as a standard production cell, not a rare option for flagship sites. Grenzebach customized build cylinders, handling, ergonomics, automation logic, and residual-powder handling for the EOS configuration, targeting controlled powder flow, contamination control, and material traceability that serial LPBF demands. The companies have collaborated since 2016, including the 2017 NextGenAM program on automated metal serial processes and later POLYLINE work on polymer lines. For Grenzebach, the order lands as its additive business sits in Grenzebach Additive Solutions GmbH, consolidated in January 2026 and led by Dimitrios Livadas from April.

Buyers should treat sub-30-minute changeover as a utilization lever only if powder logistics and process stability keep utilization high across shifts. The 155-unit commitment is a factory-capacity signal for M4 ONYX fleets in service bureaus and captive metal lines competing on machine-hour cost. Real economics still depend on coordinated material handling as much as the setup hardware itself.
