Dutch startup Hembased has launched a cold-compostable 3D printing filament made from HemCell-granulate, a powder derived from fallen palm leaf agricultural waste. Unlike industrially compostable materials that require heated facilities, the filament is designed to break down in a standard home compost bin within a year at 20-30C without leaving harmful residue. Founder Erik Janssen says the material targets circular end-of-life design rather than only print performance. Pricing starts at €32 per kilogram, roughly $36.
Hembased markets itself as the first company to offer a cold-compostable, bio-based 3D printing material, but the segment already includes ColorFabb (PHA since 2013, Pure PHA in 2022), Phanbulous, Ecogenesis EcoFab, Regen, and Loopha. The distinguishing element here is feedstock: palm leaf byproduct rather than the PHA typically sourced from agricultural or food waste that dominates this niche. That shifts the sustainability question from polymer chemistry to supply chain, since palm leaf collection intersects with palm oil plantation economics and deforestation concerns depending on sourcing practices.
The product adds a materials-origin variant to a small but growing cold-compostable filament category rather than opening a new one, and its commercial relevance will depend on print performance data and verified sourcing claims that have not yet been published.
