The wall system went up in 12 days, and the project is now the first permitted 3D-printed building in California's capital and at least the second permitted 3D-printed ADU in the state. K4k CEO David Gonzalez and his wife Estelle, an engineer at the company, built the unit on their own property for her parents, using the project to validate the technology before offering it to outside customers. The Sacramento build follows RIC Robotics' 2024 ADU in Walnut, California, an earlier milestone in the company's push into the ADU segment.
ADUs remain one of the few additive construction applications where footprint size lines up with current printer capacity, letting operators like K4k complete a project without the multi-month timelines that larger single-family builds require. Locating the build in the state capital also puts a permitted, code-compliant example directly in front of California lawmakers weighing how to streamline approvals for printed housing, a bottleneck that has slowed the segment more than the printing technology itself. RIC Robotics is simultaneously scaling its footprint through a multi-home community project with partners in Colorado and remains the hardware supplier behind Alquist's collaboration with Walmart, giving it exposure across single-unit, developer, and retail-anchored channels.
A permitted, replicable design gives regulators a reference point for pre-approving similar builds, which is the more consequential outcome for the ADU segment than any single project's completion time.
