Chinese metal AM startup 铬莱铂 (GeLaibo) has announced the DP-C1, a consumer-grade AI-driven SLM metal 3D printer priced in the tens of thousands of yuan (approximately $1,400–$14,000 USD). The machine features a 300W air-cooled fiber laser developed in-house, a compact footprint of 500×515×830 mm, and a build volume suitable for desktop use. It integrates four AI modeling modes - image-to-3D, 2D-to-3D, text-to-3D, and voice-to-model - and will debut at the Global Consumer Electronics Show in Shenzhen, June 24–26, 2026. 铬莱铂 is also open-selling its 300W air-cooled laser module to other OEMs and launching the IronNova global creator community with over 10,000 open-source metal print models.
This launch targets the long-standing gap between industrial metal LPBF systems - typically priced above $100,000 and requiring dedicated facilities - and the consumer/prosumer market dominated by polymer FDM/FFF and resin printers. 铬莱铂 is attempting to replicate the desktop FDM playbook for metal AM: shrink the hardware, automate the workflow, and build a community-driven ecosystem. The DP-C1's AI modeling layer directly addresses the steep CAD and process-parameter learning curve that has kept metal AM out of schools, maker spaces, and light commercial use. However, the machine's material scope appears limited to stainless steel initially, and the open-sale of its laser module signals that 铬莱铂 sees hardware component supply as a revenue stream, not just a vertical integration moat. The move places it in direct competition with emerging desktop metal systems from companies like One Click Metal and Xact Metal, but at a significantly lower price point.
For the AM industry, the DP-C1 is a credible attempt to expand the metal AM addressable market beyond aerospace, medical, and industrial tooling into education, hobbyist, and light commercial customization. The real test will be powder handling safety, print consistency across non-expert users, and whether the AI modeling tools produce usable, printable geometry rather than gimmicks. 铬莱铂 must also prove that its air-cooled laser maintains stable output over hundreds of hours in uncontrolled environments. If the DP-C1 delivers reliable stainless steel parts at its stated price, it could open a new consumer metal segment - but the burden of proof remains on execution, not announcement.
