Modovolo, a US-based manufacturer of modular 3D printers and drones, has qualified its BFP platform to process Lyten's 3D Graphene enhanced filaments on a material extrusion (FDM/FFF) system built for aviation, automotive, and industrial machinery parts. The BFP is transportable and designed to run in field conditions, targeting production away from centralized factories while still meeting aerospace-grade quality expectations. Modovolo CEO and co-founder Justin Call said the platform originated from an internal need: the company could not source a printer fast or affordable enough to produce aerospace-grade components at scale for its own drones, so it built one, sourced and manufactured entirely in the US. No pricing, build volume, or mechanical property data for the graphene-filled filament was disclosed.
The announcement pairs a materials producer with a hardware maker rather than adding a new process category, which is the more common way FDM/FFF platforms expand their addressable market: qualify a differentiated feedstock rather than compete on machine specifications alone. Graphene-enhanced polymers are pitched on strength-to-weight and conductivity gains over standard engineering thermoplastics, attributes that map directly onto Modovolo's stated aerospace and automotive targets. The emphasis on a fully US-sourced supply chain also lines up with the domestic-manufacturing preference now shaping defense and aerospace procurement, even though this specific announcement names no defense customer or contract.
Until Modovolo or Lyten publish mechanical test data or a named end customer, the compatibility claim should be read as a materials-qualification milestone rather than evidence of production deployment.
