AM Solutions, a Daejeon-based metal additive manufacturing specialist, received Korea’s first procedure-specific certification for laser-wire directed energy deposition (LW-DED) repair technology covering ship and defense maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) applications on July 29. The certification, issued under the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Recommendation No. 186 framework, allows shipyards to restore damaged metal structures via LW-DED rather than replacing or reprinting parts entirely, marking the first time a Korean AM repair procedure has been formally class-approved for naval-grade applications.
The regulatory approval (source) creates a structured pathway for AM in naval and defense sustainment that previously did not exist in Korea. IACS Rec. 186, published in 2021, provides a framework for qualifying AM processes across classification society members, but Korea had not produced a procedure-specific certification under it until this approval.
