Defense-driven procurement is shifting from exploratory pilots to foundational supply-chain reliance as multi-unit orders and facility expansions take root across the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Korea. These serial production contracts, paired with first-of-kind regulatory approvals for hospital-based metal implant manufacturing, indicate that structural industrial adoption now outweighs hardware-only innovation. For pure-play hardware OEMs, this means the primary competitive advantage is no longer peak print speed, but rather the ability to sustain the rigorous qualification and conformance infrastructure required by defense and medical incumbents.
Defense-driven AM production orders and facility expansions accelerate across US, Saudi Arabia, and Korea
Multiple named defense contracts, factory-scale AM equipment orders, and regulatory certifications this week confirm AM's structural shift from prototyping into serial production and sustainment for shipbuilding, munitions, and aerospace applications.
Beehive Industries ordered 30 EOS M4 ONYX metal printers to expand production of its Frenzy 8 drone turbine engine, tied to a $29.7M U.S. Air Force contract. The order is factory-scale equipment for a named expendable-engine program rather than a lab or demo install.
Separately, CoAspire was named the sole small-business prime on the U.S. Air Force Family of Affordable Mass Munitions (FAMM) for its additively manufactured RAACM cruise missile, with a target unit cost of about $218k and production aimed at 2027. That is a prime-contractor role on a named munitions program; it is not yet evidence of firm-fixed-price full-rate deliveries at the multi-thousand-unit levels discussed in earlier program materials.

AML3D enters FY2027 with A$16.8M in orders after U.S. Navy ARCEMY installations, an A$12M capacity double at Stow, and submarine spare-parts work. The backlog figure is contracted work carried forward, not converted revenue. In the same window, Phillips Corporation installed 12 hybrid metal DED systems and 12 composite 3D printers at the U.S. Navy Schoolhouse in Virginia for sailor training in point-of-need manufacturing—an industrial-base training deployment, not a production-cell award.

Outside the U.S., NAMI received a Saudi GAMI license to qualify and produce additively manufactured defense components through its 3D Systems–Dussur–Saudi Energy joint venture. In Korea, AM Solutions obtained the country’s first certification under KR’s repair-specific AM framework for LW-DED metal repair on ships and defense MRO, allowing shipyards to restore damaged metal structures rather than only printing new parts. Both are regulatory and qualification steps; neither discloses serial volumes or multi-year spend.

First FDA clearance for hospital-produced metal implants and a 510(k) for porous titanium cervical cages widen the regulatory pathway for on-site AM, while Korean self-certified GMP approval adds a parallel Asia-Pacific track.
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s 3D Medical Applications Center received FDA premarket clearance for a patient-specific titanium cranial plate system manufactured on site — reported as the first clearance for an implant produced at a point-of-care institution. The facility, which opened in 2002 inside the Department of Radiology, designs and prints anatomical models, guides, and implants for service members and veterans; 3D Systems provided enabling support on the Titanium Cranial Plate System pathway. Company records place the clearance in the 510(k) class rather than PMA, a distinction that matters for how other hospitals would have to document substantially equivalent point-of-care metal production.
In the same week, Monterey-based Elevation Spine received FDA 510(k) clearance for Saber-C AVIA, a zero-profile anterior cervical system whose 3D-printed titanium interbody uses a lattice at 55% porosity intended to approximate trabecular bone. The firm, which closed an $11M Series B in 2022 and had already surpassed 5,000 Saber-C implantations by June 2026, differentiates the platform with in-line spike fixation rather than conventional screw-based integrated fixation. The AVIA clearance adds a porous titanium interbody option inside that existing commercial system; it does not, on its face, invent a new cervical-cage category.
Separately, South Korean device maker TDM obtained self-certified GMP approval for patient-matched metal 3D-printed cheekbone implants and has flagged skull and spinal-cage products as next steps. That pathway sits under Korea’s patient-matched AM / K-GMP framework rather than FDA 510(k), so it is a parallel Asia-Pacific track, not a copy of the U.S. clearances.
HP enters high-temperature FFF, 3D Systems launches pellet extrusion, and Bambu Lab expands retail while BigRep liquidates
Three large polymer AM OEMs made concrete product moves this week: HP's first FFF printer targeting PEEK/PEI, 3D Systems' large-format pellet hybrid, and Bambu Lab's Apple-store retail placement. Separately, BigRep's SPAC liquidation closes a chapter in polymer AM consolidation.
HP launched the Industrial Filament 3D Printer 600 HT, its first FFF system, with a 500°C extruder and 195°C chamber aimed at PEEK, PEI, and carbon-fiber polymers for aerospace and medical use. The move adds filament extrusion beside HP’s existing Multi Jet Fusion polymer line; the company had already shown the 600 HT at RAPID + TCT in May 2026, and this week’s coverage is the formal product announcement rather than a first public sighting.

In the same week, 3D Systems introduced the EXT 1270 Titan as a large-format hybrid combining pellet extrusion, filament extrusion, and CNC milling for industrial molds, patterns, and end-use parts. Pellet Titan systems have been in the portfolio for several years with stated deposition rates up to about 30 lb/hr and claims of multi-fold speed and cost advantages versus filament-only extrusion; the hybrid configuration is the concrete addition this week, not a clean-sheet entry into pellet extrusion.
Separately, Bambu Lab’s P2S and PLA filament began selling in more than 60 Apple authorized retail stores across China from early July 2026, the first consumer 3D-printer brand reported in that channel. That placement sits alongside other recent offline steps—an official premium store in Thailand and a Chongqing experience store—while the company continues to push volume in desktop MEX rather than industrial equipment.
By contrast, BigRep SE entered liquidation after its SPAC path failed, with the operating unit sold to existing shareholders and reported revenue down from €11.2M to €6.3M. Mid-July coverage already had the business set for sale to De Krassny, Koehler Invest, and Hage Holding and delisting from Frankfurt; this week closes the listed-entity chapter for a large-format polymer OEM that had raised about $24.4M pre-SPAC and continued product and channel activity into July.
