Binder Jetting (BJT) is Binder Jetting — liquid binder is deposited onto a powder bed to form green parts, then sintered; enables high throughput and lower cost than fusion-based processes. AMPulse tracks 50 companies using Binder Jetting as a core technology, ranked below by total funding raised.
Typical materials: stainless steel, tool steels, tungsten carbide, sand, ceramics. Common applications: automotive components, tooling, foundry molds, end-use hardware.
Binder Jetting (BJT) deposits a liquid binder onto a powder bed via inkjet printheads, creating green parts that are subsequently sintered to full density. The process spans three distinct material families with very different economics: metal binder jetting (stainless steel, tool steel, tungsten carbide, occasionally titanium), sand binder jetting (silica sand for foundry molds and cores), and ceramic binder jetting (alumina, zirconia, silicon carbide). Metal BJT promises the cost-per-part economics of injection molding at low-to-mid volumes — once post-processing (debinding, sintering, infiltration) is automated. The technology has been the subject of more SPAC merger activity, OEM acquisitions, and customer-disappointment cycles than any other AM process in 2020-2024. The fundamental economic case remains compelling for the right applications, but production-grade qualification has been slower than industrial promises suggested.
Desktop Metal anchored the industrial metal BJT category with the Production System P-1 and P-50, then merged with Nano Dimension. ExOne (acquired by Desktop Metal in 2021) brought sand and metal BJT pedigree from German industrial roots. HP launched Metal Jet S100 in 2022, leveraging its inkjet platform from MJF. GE Additive's Binder Jet line targets specific superalloy applications. Voxeljet remains the dominant sand BJT player for foundry applications. Specialty entrants include 3DEO (US, single-pass jetting), Markforged Metal X (an SLS-derived metal alternative often grouped with BJT), and dental specialists. The category has consolidated significantly: most independent metal BJT startups now operate as divisions of larger AM holdings.
Metal BJT's 2020-2022 investor enthusiasm has cooled into a more realistic adoption curve. Production-grade qualification — particularly for aerospace and medical applications — has proven harder than hoped due to sintering shrinkage management, residual porosity, and post-processing complexity. The successful early adopters are concentrated in non-flight automotive (lighting brackets, EV thermal components), hand tools (Stanley Black & Decker), and medical instrument handles. Sand BJT has been the quiet winner: foundries adopting it for fast prototype molds and tooling face fewer qualification hurdles, and Voxeljet plus ExOne have steady installed-base growth. HP's Metal Jet entry has not yet generated the volume HP's MJF launch achieved in polymer.
Metal BJT's economic case will eventually be realized — but probably for a narrower set of applications than 2020 forecasts suggested. The likely winning segments are mid-volume hardware where neither machining nor casting fits cleanly, and dental and medical instruments. Sand BJT will continue gradual adoption replacing sand-casting tooling. The wildcard is whether continuous BJT processes achieve the throughput needed to compete with high-pressure die casting on its core volume segments.
